Manager Gary Cohen wasn’t pleased with the Marlins’ baseball awareness in their 10-4 loss in the third inning to the Mets on Wednesday night.
SNY broadcasters were infuriated when the Marlins failed to realize that Miami had three outs after a throw to first and a force out at second.
“The innings is over. Nobody seems to know how many guys are out on the field. The innings ends with a force of five-four. That’s how someone can die,” Cohen said.
When Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez came to bat with two outs in the bottom of the third inning, he hit a grounder to third baseman Emmanuel Rivera, who threw to second base for a force out to end the inning.
That should have been the end of it, but second baseman Otto Lopez smashed the ball into first base, angering Cohen.
The ball went well over the head of first baseman Jake Berger, but it didn’t matter because the inning had officially ended seconds earlier.
Alvarez also seemed a bit confused, as he stood at first base with his helmet still on before Mets first-base coach Antoine Richardson warned him the frame was over.
The Mets were leading 5-2 for a bizarre moment before cruising to victory.
Alvarez, in his second game back from the disabled list, had one hit and two RBIs in four at-bats.
Lopez, who made the errant throw that infuriated manager Cohen, finished with one hit in five at-bats for the Marlins.
