Gasoline Theft at Clovis Learning Center
Thieves struck a California learning center designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities, disrupting the lives of nearly 200 students. Surveillance footage captured the moment a suspect broke into the secure parking lot at the Diamond Learning Center in Clovis and siphoned gasoline from a van used for student transport.
According to staff, frustration is high after witnessing the theft, which occurred around 5 PM on Sunday. The video shows a man entering the property and heading directly to his vehicle carrying multiple fuel containers—though he appeared ready to take even more. “When we arrived, one of the vans had been vandalized,” said Isaac Jimenez, the center’s senior director. “There was oil everywhere, and gas cans left behind made it clear someone had stolen the fuel.”
Admittedly, it’s quite unsettling, especially given the sensitive nature of the center’s work. Jimenez’s comments hinted at deeper emotional impacts: “It also spoils the mood of the day for students. It’s hard to get them back and refocus.”
The suspect escaped with a large red container of gasoline, leaving two other canisters behind, which led staff to believe the theft was premeditated. The Clovis Police confirmed to local outlets that they received a report early Monday morning, noting three misdemeanor charges against the suspect: tampering with a vehicle, trespassing, and theft.
Investigators learned the individual gained access by climbing or finding another way past the secure perimeter. The estimated value of the stolen fuel is approximately $40, and although there was minor damage to the vehicle, it’s not being classified as significant. Interestingly, gasoline theft is relatively rare, but it seems these incidents increase when fuel prices rise.
Despite the surveillance footage, the investigation has stalled due to a lack of clear leads, leaving the case somewhat baffling. “It’s unfortunate,” police stated regarding the crime, emphasizing the violation of property rights, especially at a facility that caters to vulnerable populations.
Beyond monetary loss, the impact on the daily operation of the school is considerable. The theft has disrupted routines, causing delays in pick-ups and drop-offs and added stress for parents and staff alike. “It’s truly disheartening,” Jimenez remarked.
In an indirect message to the thief, Jimenez asserted, “Don’t come back. You might have gotten away with it this time, but don’t expect to do it again.” The center is encouraging anyone with information about the theft to step forward, emphasizing the importance of community awareness and security. Officials are also advising local drivers to lock their gas caps and park in secure areas whenever feasible, hoping to prevent future incidents.
