American Airlines appears to have promised to board the nasty “gate lice” passengers before they can turn.

Flight passengers and Reddit users visited social media platforms to share recent airport stories about American Airlines' gate agents, which hold strong airline crackdowns against “GATE lice.”

A recent flyer written in the Subreddit thread R/American Airlines praises gate agents at the airport in Pensacola, Florida for strongly enforcing the correct boarding zone.

American Airlines will expand its “gate lice” to more than 100 airports

“This morning, great gate agents on PNS were actively chasing away from boarding where the zone hadn't been called,” wrote Reddit users.

“The slowly angry Zone 9 passengers trying to board Zone 5 were enthusiastic,” the user added.

Fox News Digital has requested comment from Reddit users.

“Gate Lice” refers to passengers who attempt to cut the line and board the plane earlier than the appropriate boarding zone.

American Airlines has tackled this preventable issue by experimenting with technology that notifies GATE agents about flight passengers aboard outside the zone.

“The new technology is designed to make it easier for customers to receive the benefits of priority boarding, and will help improve the boarding experience by increasing the chances of teams getting on board,” an American Airlines spokesperson previously told Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital has contacted American Airlines for additional comment.

The technology “gives more insight into the number of customers in each boarding group, showing “expected arrival times for flight connections” and “expected arrival times for expected arrivals,” according to the airline's website.

The alert system has not yet been fully implemented at all airports, but it appears to be slowly rolling out across the country.

Airlines are actively urging passengers flying in line in front of the correct zone.

“It sounds like AA is doing it more and more recently, this is at least the fifth post. [I’ve] We've seen this over the past few months,” another Reddit user commented in the thread.

“They have announced that they will 'upgrade' the scanners and run the group before boarding. I think we started hearing them say that in January,” another user wrote.

Other social media users on X have commented on the new alert system being implemented.

“It has always been a dirty little secret that the boarding zone is not part of the boarding QR code. So when you scan the path at the gate, you don't know which zone you are in unless you look visually,” X-user writes.

The “Gate Lice” alert system first launched in November just before the busy holiday travel season.

“The initial positive responses from our customers and team members exceed our expectations, so we are excited to use this technology to provide them ahead of Thanksgiving holidays,” said Julie Russ, senior vice president of airport operations in the United States, in a 2024 press release.

The new technology is reportedly continuing to be seen at more American Airlines gates, keeping everyone in the correct boarding zone and not skipping the line.

Jacqueline Whitmore, a former flight attendant and etiquette expert based in Mount Dora, Florida, told Fox News Digital that he is supporting the airline's latest tactics.

“I think this new procedure is a good thing. It helps to accelerate the boarding process and keep people honest,” Whitmore said.
