California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a statewide emergency as the state prepares for what could be the strongest El Niño event on record.
This declaration enables the state to mobilize resources in anticipation of potentially hazardous winter storms that could lead to flooding, landslides, and coastal erosion, as reported by officials.
Newsom’s office noted that the developing El Niño is already setting records, with forecasts suggesting it may continue to intensify. There are concerns it could become the most powerful El Niño seen in documented history.
In response to this looming threat, state agencies have been instructed to set up sandbags, deploy pumps, and prepare other flood mitigation equipment. Additionally, Caltrans is getting ready with road closure and snow removal resources for highways that are at risk.
The California National Guard is also on alert, poised to help with flood responses, search-and-rescue missions, and logistics if necessary.
