Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) issued a proclamation Saturday declaring April as Arab American Heritage Month.
Newsom’s statement comes as anti-Israel protests and encampments have erupted on university and college campuses across the country, as well as a cease-fire in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, a halt to the U.S. government’s arms supply to Israel, and a wave of anti-Israel protests and encampments that have erupted on university and college campuses across the country. The US-designated Islamic terrorist organization Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 Israelis and taking over 200 hostages.

“California joins the nation in recognizing Arab American Heritage Month to celebrate the deep and wide-ranging contributions of Arab Americans in all aspects of society,” Newsom said. Said in his statement.
Approximately 95% of Arab Americans living in the United States live metropolitan areas such as Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Washington, DC; and New York City, according to the Arab American Institute.

States such as California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Texas, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Minnesota, and Massachusetts have some of the largest populations of Arab Americans.
“California, home to more immigrants than any other state, knows firsthand that diversity is our greatest asset,” Newsom continued. “Our state is fortunate to have one of the largest Arab-American populations in the nation, with communities in Los Angeles, San Diego, the Bay Area, and other areas of the state tracing Arab-American heritage that spans the Middle East and North Africa. The community is thriving.”
