California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) left California to “stand up” with President Joe Biden at the White House for a Democratic Governors Conference that could also be attended virtually, despite the ongoing wildfire emergency.
Newsom was seen as a possible replacement for the Democratic nominee if incumbent Biden withdraws from the 2024 presidential race after his disastrous debate defeat, but other candidates have joined him.

The list of attendees also includes Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, whose name has sometimes been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, another possible future presidential candidate.
However, several governors have attended virtually, and it is unclear why Newsom chose to attend in person.

Biden will meet with Democratic governors in a meeting closed to the media at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time, the White House said. The meeting comes amid growing calls for the president to resign and questions swirling about his fitness for duty after he appeared to lose his train of thought several times during last week’s debate.
Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday in Butte County, where the Thompson Fire is burning, and there are other wildfires and fire dangers throughout the state.
Governor Newsom has a habit of disappearing from California during emergencies: Last March, when a massive snowstorm left residents stranded and close to death, the governor left California for a vacation in Mexico.
The California governor assured the Biden administration that he would not challenge the president in a primary in 2022. He may be regretting that decision as Democrats struggle to find a nominee and how to legally replace Biden.
