Newsom’s Reaction to White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting

Gavin Newsom made an unexpected statement regarding the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner just hours after he had mocked President Trump’s appearance there.

Before the event, the governor’s press team took the chance to tease Trump, saying, “We wish ‘Little D’ the best of luck at tonight’s WHCD dinner,” with the message signed by “Governor GCN.” They also noted, “I’m happy that he can finally meet the ‘mentalist’. It’s been a while!”

The mentalist mentioned was Oz Perlman, who had been seen performing one of his mind-reading acts for Trump just before the shooting started.

Following the gunfire and the apprehension of a suspect, Newsom reassessed his tone about the event. He tweeted, “Based on initial reports, all attendees of tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner were safe and secure. Freedom of the press is the foundation of our country. Violence will never be tolerated.”

The individual arrested was identified as Cole Thomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. He allegedly sent out an anti-Trump manifesto in which he expressed plans to target officials from Trump’s administration.

In this manifesto, he stated, “I am not a bombed school child, a starving child, or a teenage girl abused by the current administration’s many criminals.” His writing suggested a sense of urgency against perceived oppression.

Newsom’s more aggressive stance toward Trump online has gained attention, especially as speculation about a potential run for the 2028 presidential election grows. Critics argue that his rhetoric may inadvertently encourage violence against Trump.

Other California politicians dismissed any claims linking their criticism of Trump to political violence, emphasizing that the rhetoric surrounding the president doesn’t justify violent acts.

In a statement, Nancy Pelosi expressed relief that everyone at the dinner was safe and conveyed her sympathy for those affected by the violent incident.

She noted, “As someone whose family has been affected by political violence, my prayers go out to the injured police officer and all those impacted by this horrific incident.”
