New Fortnite Feature Sparks Generational Confusion
A recent update to Fortnite has left many players, particularly older generations, scratching their heads. The game introduced a new mode called DeLulu, featuring something they call “Proximity Voice Chat.”
Fortnite and its parent company, Epic Games, have reported banning “thousands” of users over the weekend, claiming it’s due to problematic behavior in voice chat. They encouraged players to report any in-game chat violations, reinforcing their commitment to community standards.
This feature allows players to communicate with nearby squadmates—and even those not on their teams. It brings Fortnite into a unique space where user freedom meets surveillance, with a reported user base in the millions.
Interestingly, it seems like a considerable portion of the Gen Z demographic is now experiencing unfiltered interactions with strangers for the first time. This shift in communication can be a bit overwhelming.
Some players shared their experiences, labeling the proximity chat feature as problematic. One user recounted, “When I play solo, I hear things I just don’t want to repeat. I’m just here to enjoy the game.” Another noted, “It was mostly okay, but there was one specific group who kept joining my games.” One player even shared that a group of French kids demanded to be addressed as ‘Daddy’ or face in-game consequences.
Concerns about inappropriate language have also come up. A few noted instances of racial slurs being tossed around casually during matches, which undoubtedly raises alarm bells. Players are now contemplating how much access Fortnite has to their in-game conversations, especially considering the voice chat reporting feature captures the last five minutes of audio, stored locally but subject to reporting.
It’s worth mentioning that while user complaints aren’t new, the recent surge in bans, alongside these new features released in 2023, is making some players rethink their engagement. On one hand, the allure of open, dynamic communication makes the environment exciting. Yet, many players seem anxious to sacrifice a bit of their privacy for the sake of social interaction.
Reactions vary, and whether or not the alleged toxic behavior is an ongoing problem is something players have yet to fully unpack. It seems perhaps they’ll need to either mute their peers or address the issues directly if they want to keep their gaming experience enjoyable.
