George Clooney Voices Concerns on AI in Hollywood

George Clooney expressed his worries about artificial intelligence during a recent interview. He noted that many in the Hollywood community are quite unsettled by how lifelike AI creations have become, particularly with advances in audio and video technology.

“The Sora 2 situation really caught everyone off guard,” he remarked, referring to a recent AI model that surprised many by raising quality standards significantly. “It’s unsettling,” he added, highlighting the seriousness of the issue.

Clooney went on to describe how he has encountered AI-generated videos of himself engaging in activities he’s never actually done. This raises a troubling question about people’s ability to tell what’s real and what’s fabricated. “There have been instances where I’ve been depicted saying or doing things that are completely false—the implications are concerning,” he said. “It puts your family at risk; it’s a complicated scenario, but there’s no turning back now. I’m unclear about what the future holds.”

His remarks arrive at a time when Hollywood is trying to figure out the evolving role of AI in filmmaking. Recently, some controversy erupted over a proposal to sign an AI-generated actress named Tilly Norwood to a talent agency, prompting significant backlash.

Tilly, a creation of AI studio Particle6, represents just one of the new innovations that creator Elaine van Velden aims to incorporate into mainstream films. In her conversation with the media, she anticipated that fully AI-generated films might not be far off. “I believe next year, you’ll see a lot of effects crafted with AI technology. Gradually, we’ll see a movie that’s almost entirely AI,” she noted.

However, the reception to the concept of AI actresses like Norwood has been mostly negative. The Hollywood Actors Guild, SAG-AFTRA, condemned such proposals, stating, “Norwood is not an actor; she’s a character created without consent or fair compensation, lacking genuine life experiences or emotions. Viewers seem to show little interest in artificial content devoid of human authenticity.”

Clooney remains skeptical about AI actors overshadowing real movie stars. “AI will face the same challenges we do in Hollywood. It’s difficult to pinpoint what makes someone a star. It’s not merely looks—there’s something elusive at play. AI will grapple with that same problem,” he stated.
