George Lombard Jr. Shines Against Elite Talent

George Lombard Jr. is making a name for himself in the world of baseball. The 20-year-old Yankees prospect displayed his talent during a recent game between the Double-A Somerset Patriots and the Reading Fightin’ Phils, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a notable double against Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler.

Wheeler, working through his fourth rehab game after surgery for a blood clot and thoracic outlet syndrome, struck Lombard out in his first two appearances and managed to retire him with a fly out. Still, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lombard turned the game around, driving the first pitch he saw into right-center for an RBI double, marking Somerset’s first score.

He didn’t stop there; in the seventh inning, he brought in another RBI, boosting the Somerset lead to 7-3.

Afterward, Wheeler, who allowed nine strikeouts and three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings, spoke highly of Lombard’s abilities. “He had good swings all night,” he commented to reporters after the game at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, New Jersey. “You can just tell he’s a strong kid with a solid bat trajectory. He’s going to be a great player.” He added, with a hint of humor, “I hope I don’t have to deal with him too much.”

Ranked as the Yankees’ top prospect by MLB Pipeline, Lombard is now showing that his offensive skills are catching up to his strong defensive game. Entering the recent series, he boasted impressive stats: a .464 batting average along with two home runs and four RBIs.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 190 pounds, Lombard has had a noteworthy spring training. He even hit a home run off Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet earlier in the season.

“Playing against the elite players is always thrilling,” Lombard shared. “I was eager to take my swings, aiming to focus and not overdo it.”

In addition to shining at the plate, Lombard has been consistent defensively as a shortstop. Team officials are optimistic about his future as they’ve seen significant growth in his game. Yankees manager Boone noted Lombard’s physical development, stating, “He’s getting better every year, gives solid at-bats, knows the zone, and stays disciplined.” He added that Lombard’s focus needs to expand into finishing plays effectively.

On Tuesday, Lombard also showcased his adaptability, starting at third base rather than his usual shortstop position while Anthony Volpe began his rehab. Volpe struggled, going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts before being replaced in the sixth, allowing Lombard to take over at shortstop.

Volpe echoed Wheeler regarding Lombard’s impressive performance. “He was solid,” he said afterward. “He made some great fielding plays, had a productive at-bat, and sent a nice shot to right field. He’s a dedicated worker and a fantastic kid—it’s an exciting time ahead.”
