Former Teacher Sentenced for Student Abuse
A former teacher from a Christian school in Georgia received a 12-year prison sentence on Monday after acknowledging she sexually abused a 15-year-old student, an incident that ultimately led to the closure of the school.
Sherry Delle Mauldin, 61, entered a guilty plea in Greene County Superior Court, where she was also given 25 years of probation and mandated to register as a sex offender.
The case involved accusations that Mauldin exploited a teenage boy during her tenure at Nathanael Green Academy, a private Christian institution located in Siloam, Georgia. Prosecutors noted that the abuse occurred over a month, involving several sexual encounters at different sites.
District Attorney T. Wright Barksdale III remarked, “This was a 15-year-old child against a 60-year-old adult,” emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Barksdale indicated that the prosecution had sought a more extended prison term due to several “aggravating circumstances,” notably the significant age gap and the dynamics of a teacher-student relationship. He mentioned that the duration of the abuse carried weight in the case as well.
Judge Terry N. Massey, however, decided on a sentence six years shorter than what the prosecution had initially requested.
Mauldin’s legal team argued for a suspended sentence, asserting that she deserved no prison time. In court, she expressed feelings of being in a “dark place” during the incidents and conveyed remorse for her actions.
The investigation into Mauldin’s misconduct began after another ex-teacher from the same academy, Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, 26, was taken into custody on similar charges involving the same student. Brown has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting a jury trial scheduled for next month.
The allegations against both educators resulted in the permanent closure of Nathanael Green Academy, which had been in operation since 1959. The academy announced its closure last year following the unfolding scandal.
In a statement, the teenage victim accused school officials of failing to safeguard him, saying, “They took advantage of my position as a teacher. School didn’t protect me as a child.”
