Georgia: Colt Gray, the accused shooter from Apalachee High School, is scheduled for a plea and sentencing hearing

Hearing Scheduled for Teen in Georgia School Shooting Case

A court hearing has been set for Colt Gray, the 16-year-old accused of the deadliest school shooting in Georgia’s history. The judge will hear arguments and determine sentencing later this month.

Gray faces 55 charges, including murder and child abuse, tied to the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School on September 4, 2024. In this incident, two students and two teachers lost their lives, and several others were injured.

The judge plans to initiate a “no-negotiation plea and sentencing hearing” on July 24. In this type of plea, neither the prosecution nor the defense has reached an agreement regarding sentencing, leaving the judge to decide based on the presented cases.

Previously, the judge indicated that Gray had until July 15 to inform the court about his intention to plead guilty before trial.

In related news, Gray’s father, Colin, was convicted in March on multiple charges, including second-degree murder for supplying his son with the rifle used in the shooting. His sentencing is set for late July and he could be facing up to 180 years in prison.

Colin Gray admitted purchasing the firearm as a Christmas gift, claiming it was meant to bond with Colt through hunting and shooting practice. However, prosecutors argue that he ignored previous violent behaviors exhibited by his son.

In a past interview, Colin revealed that Colt experienced severe bullying at school and was often called derogatory names by classmates. “He was made fun of day in and day out,” he recounted.

On the day of the shooting, investigators state that Colt Gray concealed a semi-automatic rifle in a school bus wrapped in poster board. After the second class period, he allegedly exited the bathroom armed and began firing throughout the school.

Among the victims were teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimy, 53, along with students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14 years old. Additionally, another teacher and eight students were injured, several from gunfire.

Authorities have indicated that Colt meticulously planned the shooting, even leaving behind a notebook with detailed instructions and diagrams, estimating a potential casualty figure much higher than the actual toll.

Prosecutors have mentioned that Gray also created a shrine in his room dedicated to Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator of the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida.

The trial for Gray is set for October 13, taking place in Columbia County to ensure an impartial jury, about 100 miles from Barrow County, where the shooting occurred.

Reports suggest that if convicted, Gray could face a maximum sentence of 30 years for second-degree murder, amounting to a potential total of up to 180 years.

Since his arrest, Gray has been held at the Gainesville Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Gainesville, Georgia.
