Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Wednesday afternoon that the attacker at Apalachee High School was thwarted by armed school resource officers.
The shooter was confronted by a school resource officer and given the choice to surrender or be shot, Smith said at a joint press conference with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
FOX 35 Orlando broadcast the press conference. Mr Smith said:“Apparently the shooter was armed and our school resource officer engaged him, but the shooter quickly realized that if he did not give up, it would end in an officer-involved shootout.”
The gunman “gave up and went to the ground and officers took him into custody,” he said.
Ironically, in 2019, during her first presidential campaign, Kamala Harris called for removing police officers from schools.
