Georgia Representative Buddy Carter urges increased ICE presence following the death of a Savannah teacher.

Georgia lawmakers are pushing for an increase in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the state after the tragic death of a teacher allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant who was fleeing from the police.

“It’s really unfortunate,” said Republican Rep. Buddy Carter. “No one should have to face this kind of situation.”

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Oscar Vazquez Lopez, a special education teacher from a school in Savannah, Georgia, died after running a red light while fleeing from an ICE operation earlier this month.

DHS stated that Vazquez-Lopez was a “criminal illegal alien from Guatemala” who had a final removal order from a federal judge back in 2024.

Carter, who has previously emphasized the need for more ICE presence in Georgia’s capital, feels that having additional federal agents throughout the state could be essential in preventing similar incidents in the future.

“I’ve advocated for more ICE agents in Atlanta, and it’s time to extend that across Georgia,” he remarked. “This is serious. We need to prioritize removing criminal illegal immigrants from our country. We can sort the rest out later.”

Carter highlighted a concerning report suggesting that around 500,000 illegal immigrants reside in Georgia.

DHS also mentioned that Vazquez-Lopez faces vehicular homicide charges after the fatal crash that resulted in his “minor injuries.” Reports indicate that ICE officers attempted to stop his vehicle during a traffic stop; however, he initially complied before fleeing, making an illegal U-turn, running a red light, and crashing into the teacher’s car.

Tensions regarding ICE operations have escalated, especially following President Donald Trump’s intensification of efforts against illegal immigration. This crackdown was noted in various cities, including Minneapolis, which saw a large withdrawal of federal agents recently.

In recent weeks, incidents have led to tragic outcomes, including the shooting of an American citizen by ICE agents as she reportedly tried to escape a demonstration site. Another American was also killed by a Customs and Border Protection officer during a separate anti-ICE demonstration.
