Germany’s Foreign Ministry issued a new travel advisory for the United States on Tuesday, primarily due to a significant winter storm affecting much of the country. This storm has brought heavy snowfall, strong winds, and disruptions to key airports. Additionally, the advisory noted the prevailing political climate in the U.S.
The advisory specifically mentions concerns about “demonstrations, immigrants, and encounters with security forces,” offering caution for German travelers heading to the U.S.
According to the advisory, “In Minneapolis and other cities, demonstrations can sometimes lead to violent confrontations with immigration and security officials.” This has prompted German authorities to urge travelers to stay informed by following local media, practice vigilance, and avoid areas where violence might occur.
Travelers are also encouraged to “stay calm and heed the advice of local authorities and security personnel.” Protests have recently escalated in the Twin Cities, partly in response to President Trump’s immigration policies.
In recent days, tensions have heightened after federal agents were involved in fatal shootings, leading to protests that have resulted in multiple arrests and damage to property.
During an exclusive interview, President Trump insisted that the removal of Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino wasn’t a “reversal,” and expressed regret over the deaths tied to federal agents. “It was terrible. Both were terrible,” he remarked. He also referred to the “domestic political situation” in the U.S. as part of the advisory’s context.
“The risk of politically motivated violence also remains elevated,” the advisory states. Notably, it points out that significant American cities are seeing a rise in violent crime.
In a similar vein, the U.S. State Department has placed Germany under a “Level 2 – Enhanced Alert” travel advisory as of May 13, 2025. This advisory warns of threats from terrorist groups and lone attackers, who may target public places using various methods, including knives and explosives.
Overall, the situation reflects a broader concern regarding safety as travelers navigate these complex circumstances while abroad.
