NFL Fines Giants, Coach, and Rookie Over Concussion Protocol Violations
The NFL, along with its players’ union, has imposed a hefty fine totaling $315,000 on the New York Giants, head coach Brian Daboll, and rookie Cam Scatterbo due to actions deemed discriminatory to league regulations.
The Giants will pay $200,000, Daboll is fined $100,000, and Scatterbo faces a $15,000 penalty for not adhering to the league’s concussion protocols during an evaluation of quarterback Jackson Dart on October 9 against the Eagles.
Investigators concluded that while Daboll’s intrusion into the medical tent to speak with Dart and Scatterbo’s presence there didn’t impact Dart’s examination or care, their behavior indicated a disregard for concussion protocol requirements, thus violating the rules.
It’s crucial to ensure that only essential medical personnel are present during concussion evaluations. The NFL pointed out that the head coach’s influence on the medical staff was particularly concerning, creating a situation where assumptions could be made regarding the examination.
After the game, Daboll expressed regret for shouting at the team’s physician, Dr. Scott Rodeo, on the sideline.
The NFL and NFLPA reviewed all pertinent documents and videos, interviewing both the Giants’ medical team and independent medical experts present during the game. It was concluded that the medical staff did adhere to the proper concussion protocol procedures.
Owner John Mara, a member of the NFL’s health and safety committee, has criticized Daboll’s actions but seems to believe the coach’s claim that his intention was merely to check on Dart, rather than to rush him back into play.
A statement noted that the Giants have taken immediate steps to avoid future violations, which includes cooperating fully with the ongoing review, enhancing training for staff and players regarding the medical tent, and implementing more measures to restrict access to authorized personnel during concussion assessments.
However, it remains unclear what these “additional measures” actually involve.
Scatterbo, who has a rookie salary of $840,000, previously mentioned that he entered the tent to help Dart, who was anxious about being sidelined during a crucial part of the game.
