Media Scrutiny and Family Privacy: Gisele Fetterman’s Take
Gisele Fetterman, the wife of Senator John Fetterman, recently criticized the media for encroaching on her family’s privacy during a podcast conversation with Meghan McCain. In her view, the media is too often rewarded for invasive reporting.
She shared her experience of feeling surrounded by reporters after her husband was admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center shortly after her own swearing-in as a senator in 2023. “They knew John wasn’t home and were looking for me. I was actually in the car at the time,” Gisele recounted. “When I entered the garage, there were media vehicles outside my home. I’m just a private citizen,” she emphasized.
Gisele expressed hope that their children would be shielded from such public scrutiny, although she acknowledged that they wouldn’t completely escape the impacts of reports involving their father. John Fetterman’s health concerns had been a topic during his Senate campaign after he suffered a stroke in May 2022. Despite winning the race, ongoing scrutiny of his health persisted, especially after his admission to Walter Reed for depression. He has been candid about his struggles with cognitive and mental health.
McCain, drawing from her own experiences, noted that her father’s battle with brain cancer had intensified media scrutiny during that time, making it incredibly challenging. She asked Gisele if there had been any lessons learned by the press about reporting on those with health issues with more kindness.
“No,” Gisele replied firmly, indicating that the media’s motivations seem to revolve around clicks and readership. “They’re rewarded for writing about personal difficulties. It feels like the goal becomes to dig deeper into worse situations.” Since John Fetterman took office, he has faced criticism from progressive factions within his party for his stance on issues like Israel and his occasional defense of Donald Trump.
Furthermore, Gisele indicated her lack of interest in pursuing a political career herself and mentioned she would not support her husband if he were to consider a run for the presidency.
