Virginia Governor Calls for Opponent’s Resignation After Controversial Texts
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has recently urged Democrat Jay Jones to exit the Attorney General race amid the resurfacing of certain 2022 text messages. In these texts, Jones made shocking comments suggesting harm against Republican Jason Miyares, which Youngkin described as “beyond disqualification” during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”
Youngkin emphasized the need for Democrats to align on moral values, stating, “This is actually a ticket that allows their children to stay on the ticket they want to die.” This statement seems to reflect frustrations not only with Jones but perhaps with the Democratic Party’s direction overall.
Jones, who is challenging Republican incumbent Miyares, has been criticized for violent remarks made in a text exchange with GOP House delegate Carrie Coiner regarding former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert. In one particularly alarming message, Jones compared Gilbert to some of history’s most notorious figures, suggesting he deserves violence.
Specifically, the text included lines like: “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert, Hitler, and Polpot. Gilbert gets two bullets in his head.” Further comments implied that Gilbert’s actions could lead to violence against children, which raises serious concerns about Jones’ judgment and rhetoric.
The backlash from this revelation has been widespread, even attracting condemnation from fellow Democrats. Abigail Spanberger, a candidate for the governor’s seat looking to succeed Youngkin, stated she is deeply troubled by Jones’ statements and emphasized the need for accountability in political discourse.
However, Youngkin pointed out that Spanberger’s response didn’t go far enough, urging her to insist on Jones’ resignation. When reached for comment, Jones didn’t reject the validity of the messages, admitting he regretted his words but also characterized the ongoing critique as politically motivated attacks against him.
In a follow-up, Jones expressed embarrassment over his comments and mentioned he reached out to Gilbert and his family to apologize. It’s clear that the situation is having significant repercussions in Virginia politics, not just for Jones’ campaign but for the broader electoral landscape as well.
