International Coalition Forming to Disarm Hamas
Vice President JD Vance recently announced the formation of an international coalition aimed at disarming Hamas. This initiative comes as the Trump administration strives to uphold President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace proposal.
During a press briefing after his trip to Israel, Vance commented that disarming Hamas will require time and largely hinge on the makeup of the coalition. He added that American troops will not be present on the ground in Gaza, though they will play a role in overseeing and mediating peace efforts.
“No American troops on the ground, but American troops supervising and mediating the peace… The International Security Force is going to now take the lead in disarming Hamas,” Vance stated after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
These statements were made in light of ongoing threats to the delicate peace agreement, primarily due to Hamas’s unwillingness to relinquish its arms as outlined in Trump’s proposal. A recent report from Reuters highlighted that senior Hamas official Mohammed Nazzal did not fully endorse the disarmament process, hinting that any concessions would depend on assurances regarding the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Vance concluded his visit to Israel on Thursday, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio expected to wrap up his own visit on Saturday. When asked about Israel’s need for U.S. permission to resume fighting in Gaza, Rubio replied that it wasn’t a matter of permission but rather a collective commitment to making the peace plan successful.
“There is no Plan B. This is the best plan. It’s the only plan. It’s one that we think can succeed… If Hamas refuses to demilitarize, it’ll be a violation of the agreement, and that’ll have to be enforced,” Rubio emphasized.
He also noted that the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of Gaza is a long-term endeavor. The goal, he stated, is to create conditions in which the people of Gaza can lead lives free from Hamas’s terror, pursuing jobs, businesses, and a brighter future.
