Phil Mickelson Comments on California Fraud Allegations

Golf star Phil Mickelson took to social media to express his concerns regarding alleged fraud in California, his home state.

During a New Year’s Eve event, former President Donald Trump stated that the fraud occurring in California, New York, and Illinois surpasses the recently discovered welfare fraud in Minnesota.

Mickelson reacted to remarks made by Rep. Kevin Kiley, R-Calif., who criticized California’s newly proposed billionaire tax during interviews on Fox Business and CNN, describing it as deeply flawed. He tweeted, “No amount of tax money can help CA unless the fraud issue is resolved. CA’s fraud makes MN look like an amateur.”

He further criticized the tax proposals, saying, “Instead of stopping the fraud and theft and getting your money back, they plan to impose even more taxes on a population that already has the highest taxes in the country.”

In response to a local opinion piece about the billionaire tax, Mickelson suggested, “Why not impose no new taxes until the government eliminates the fraud? Until that happens, more taxes will just fund more fraud.”

In another post, Mickelson argued that addressing fraud could cost Democrats electoral support, stating, “The dilemma for all Democrats is that if we stop fraud, illegal immigration, and voter fraud in California, Republicans will win California and have a supermajority nationally, all but ending the Democratic Party.”

On the same day, Trump made additional comments about California’s fraud on Truth Social, emphasizing that the situation there is worse than in Minnesota. He referenced both California Governor Gavin Newsom and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is central to the state’s recent fraud issues, asserting, “If that were possible, California has more fraud than Minnesota. Add in election fraud and they’re tied for first place. Two corrupt governors, two corrupt states!”

In response, Newsom’s office issued a pointed statement regarding Trump’s claims. The spokesperson called Trump an “insane, habitual liar” and reiterated that since taking office, Newsom has worked to combat fraud, stopping over $125 billion in fraudulent activities, while criticizing Trump’s tendency to support those involved in such schemes.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced on Tuesday that it is halting all child care payments to the state amid growing scrutiny over allegations of fraud linked to child care centers throughout California.
