Google Removed Christian 'TruPlay' App for 'Inappropriate' Images of Jesus Christ, Then Retracted After Inquiry

TruPlay’s Advertising Restrictions by Google

TruPlay, a platform focusing on Christian entertainment for kids, has been told by Google that it cannot advertise on the Google Play Store. More recently, the platform was informed that its app updates were being denied due to content deemed “inappropriate” for children. This content specifically refers to the depiction of Jesus Christ on the cross. In response to inquiries about this situation, Google later retracted its decision, labeling it as an “error.”

In a statement, a representative from TruPlay described Google’s actions as a disparity compared to competitors like Roblox, which continues to operate without restrictions, despite hosting violent content. TruPlay’s intent is to offer games with a Christian message, while Roblox features games filled with graphic violence. Duesing claimed that Google’s AI appears to be designed to suppress Christian values.

Duesing noted that Google explicitly stated, “You can’t promote religious content,” while allowing Roblox to showcase visuals like pentagrams and grisly themes. He also highlighted the contradiction in promoting content related to other religions while restricting Christian themes.

Recently, Google communicated to TruPlay that it wouldn’t approve updates to the app due to alleged policy violations. The notice indicated that content was unsuitable for children, specifically mentioning violence and shocking images.

In light of these restrictions, Google even provided examples of content that it considered inappropriate, including a cartoon image of Jesus on the cross. “It seems they’re trying to erase the image of Jesus from children’s perspectives,” Duesing remarked, while drawing attention to the violent content that Google seems to permit on other platforms.

Despite this, after reaching out for comment, TruPlay received an email from Google stating that their appeal had been approved. Consequently, Google lifted the restrictions, allowing TruPlay to update its app. A spokesperson from Google remarked that the previous block on TruPlay’s app was a mistake.

Although Google maintains that religious content can be advertised, they reiterated the importance of not targeting users based on sensitive data like religious beliefs. However, TruPlay’s CEO expressed frustration over the earlier rejections and the lack of responsiveness from Google. He emphasized the need for regulatory measures to prevent AI from discriminating against Christian perspectives in the future.

Duesing raised concerns about the long-term implications of AI within tech companies. He argued that as AI evolves, there’s a pressing need for regulations to ensure it does not harm Christian values or society at large. He added that the responsibilities lie with elected representatives to safeguard these values.

Reflecting on societal issues, Duesing pointed out concerning trends among youth, mentioning rising rates of anxiety and depression. TruPlay’s mission, he explained, revolves around delivering engaging content rooted in Biblical principles to children in need of hope and positivity in today’s world.
