Republicans Criticize Mamdani’s Grocery Store Proposal

House Republicans are expressing concerns regarding New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s suggestion for government-operated grocery stores, drawing from their own experiences in the grocery business.

Rep. Michael Rulli, a Republican from Ohio, shared his thoughts, saying, “This will be a bullet at the heart of the US grocery industry. Once this is revealed.” Mamdani, identifying as a democratic socialist, has proposed a pilot program that would establish five government-owned grocery stores—one in each borough of New York City—aimed at addressing food insecurity and lowering grocery prices in underprivileged areas.

However, Rulli and other skeptics point out that supermarkets generally operate on very narrow profit margins, often ranging between 1% and 3%. Rulli, who manages his family’s grocery chain, Rulli Brothers, noted that his stores have achieved similar margins over the past few years.

“My brother runs that store, our family’s store… They’ve been between 1.25% and 1.7% net in the last five or six years,” Rulli explained. He worries that even a small number of these government stores could severely disrupt the market for local businesses.

“Imagine if there’s a government-run store in Cleveland that charges half of what other stores do,” he posed. Rulli raised doubts about how this would affect all grocery outlets—from small family-owned stores to large chains like Kroger—potentially driving many out of business.

He believes this proposal could ultimately harm working-class Americans by limiting their access to various options, specifically mentioning the beloved “bodegas” of New York City, which serve as vital community resources.

Rulli also recalled a notable image of Boris Yeltsin, where the former Russian leader was impressed by the variety available in a Texas grocery store, indicating that options contribute positively to quality of life. “One of the few comforts blue-collar Americans have is the variety of goods available at the grocery store,” he stated.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old member of the New York State Legislature, has gained attention with his progressive stance and strong backing from influential national Democratic figures, making him a target for Republican criticism.

While some Republicans view Mamdani’s potential victory in the upcoming election as a political opportunity, they remain opposed to the implications of his grocery store plan. Mamdani is competing against Republican Curtis Swawawa and current Democrat Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent. There are also whispers that former Governor Andrew Cuomo is considering an independent run.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for a response regarding the concerns raised by Rulli.
