Controversy Over NYC Council Member’s Remarks

A Republican City Council member in New York City is under fire for an “Islamophobic” social media post. In response, Brooklyn Councilwoman Inna Vernikov criticized her left-wing adversaries for not speaking out after a fellow Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member claimed that Muslim pro-Israel demonstrators were causing trouble.

On Friday, Vernikov dismissed calls for her resignation from a new coalition dubbed “One Standard New York City,” which gathered outside City Hall with approximately two dozen religious leaders and civil rights advocates.

She faced backlash after sharing a video showing a Muslim man praying in public near a Jewish girls’ school in Brooklyn, questioning whether his presence was intended to intimidate the students.

“Why would adults choose to do this outside a school full of Jewish girls? Isn’t that what mosques are for? Was this intentional?” she posted on X.

Various speakers, including Queens activist Japneet Singh, condemned Vernikov and Queens Republican Councilwoman Vicki Palladino as “cancerous.” They urged City Council President Julie Menin to take disciplinary action against them.

Singh emphasized the importance of representation, stating, “We don’t get to choose who we want to represent. If we decide to lead, we must represent every constituency, whether Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, or even those with no faith.” He added that elected officials must fulfill their duties to represent the community.

Despite the criticism, Vernikov pointed out that Democratic Socialist Councilor Shahana Hanif recently targeted two Muslims involved in organizing a significant pro-Israel protest. Hanif’s past remarks have often drawn attention, particularly those expressing strong feelings against certain groups.

Hanif, known for her outspoken stance on pro-Palestine issues, had expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the protest organizers, even going so far as to say she wanted them to face dire consequences in the afterlife.

In defense of her actions, Vernikov claimed that those rallying against her had been silent regarding Hanif’s remarks toward fellow Muslims. “The same people who wished for my removal before I even co-chaired the Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism are now accusing me,” she stated. “It’s just ironic.”

CAIR-NY, linked to a controversial Islamic charity facing accusations of ties to Hamas, also participated in the rallies against Vernikov’s post. Their executive director did not address Hanif’s comments directly but emphasized their support for her and the struggles Muslims face regarding accountability.

Moreover, both Chairman Menin and Chairman Hanif have yet to respond to requests for additional comments on the situation. The council recently had to abandon a planned disciplinary action against Palladino after legal challenges from her colleagues concerning ethics complaints related to actions against Muslim individuals.
