GOP platform chair Marsha Blackburn defends abortion approach, reveals Trump’s role

Ahead of its national convention in Milwaukee next week, the Republican Party is overhauling its platform for the first time in eight years, drawing public attention for softening the party’s historic anti-abortion stance.

Republicans angered some pro-lifers, including former Vice President Mike Pence, by dropping a long-standing demand for a constitutional amendment that would say life begins at conception and explicitly leave it up to the states to regulate abortion.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), who chaired the platform committee, argued in an interview with The Washington Post this week that Republicans remain strongly “anti-abortion” and that critics of the 16-page platform “wanted the old-fashioned 100-page document and a more detailed, historical approach.”

“Of course, the Republican Party is a pro-life party,” she said, “and we will always be a pro-life party, and this document makes it clear that we are a pro-life party.”

In 2016, the platformIn the bill, which was carried over to 2020, Republicans voiced support for the so-called “Human Life Amendment,” praising efforts to restrict abortion nationwide and asserting that “the unborn child has a fundamental right to life that must not be infringed.”

In its new platform, the Republican Party declared that it would “protect and defend the vote of the people in each state on issues of life,” and emphasized its opposition to late-term abortion and its support for increased access to contraception and in vitro fertilization.

The Republican Party has included anti-abortion language in its platform since 1976, the first election after the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade.

“Roe was overturned by Dobbs [in June 2022]”That is handed back to the state and the people, and as the platform says, the state is there to put limitations and regulations on those practices,” Blackburn said.

Former President Donald Trump, 78, publicly voiced his opposition to a federal abortion ban in April, calling for states to take the lead, to the dismay of the former vice president, who called the policy platform a “big disappointment” and warned that “this is not the time to compromise in the fight for the right to life.”

The 2024 campaign platform has the nominee’s fingerprints all over it, with 20 promises to the American people listed in all-caps bullet points that mirror some of Trump’s Truth Social posts.

For example, one pledge pledged to “prevent World War III” and build a “giant steel dome missile defense shield across the entire nation.”

“He was very engaged,” Blackburn told The Post about Trump. “He read it, he edited it, he worked on it, he reviewed it and he approved it.”

“This is a great to-do list for Republicans running for office at the local, state and federal levels.”

“What we heard over and over again is that what the public wants is a simple, concise document that communicates what we believe and also what we intend to do about the issues facing the country,” Blackburn explained.

“People wanted something that was easy to read and could print out and take with them when they went door-to-door.”

Issues not discussed in the platform include same-sex marriage, a balanced budget and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Instead, he has taken a hard line on immigration, promising to carry out the “largest” deportations in U.S. history and to send in the military to implement a “total fentanyl shutdown.”

The platform also addresses current social issues, promising to “remove men from women’s sports, ban taxpayer-funded sex-reassignment surgery, and prevent taxpayer-funded schools from promoting sex change.”

Other notable policies include President Biden’s Presidential Decree Imposing new restrictions on the development of artificial intelligence is an issue that has become even more prominent since 2016.

Republicans also angered fiscal hawks by ruling out cuts to Social Security or Medicare or changes to the retirement age, and pledging to ensure the long-term sustainability of trust fund-held programs. Predicted to be heading for bankruptcy Within the next 10 years.
