GOP Rep. Dave Taylor asserts that the swastika flag spotted in a DC office was a 'trick' after investigation

Rep. Dave Taylor’s Office Discovers Flag with Swastika

On Thursday, Rep. Dave Taylor (R-Ohio) expressed his concerns over a flag featuring a swastika that was found in his office. He claimed that the Nazi symbol was initially not easily noticeable to the “naked eye.”

This unsettling flag, designed with red and white stripes that formed a Third Reich emblem, was visible behind staffer Angelo Elia during a virtual meeting on Tuesday. This prompted Taylor to report the matter to Capitol Police, which has since launched an investigation, according to Politico.

In a statement, Taylor mentioned, “We have confirmed that several Republican offices were targeted by unknown individuals who distributed these flags that, at first glance, looked like ordinary American flags.” He added that his office was also affected by this deception.

“After conducting a thorough internal investigation, our team is confident that no one would deliberately display such an abhorrent image. The flag was taken down as soon as the symbol was discovered,” he continued.

Taylor also noted his intention to cooperate with Capitol Police and the House Administration Committee to gather more information regarding this incident.

Capitol Police did not respond immediately to inquiries from the press.

The troubling image of the flag was first posted on social media by Ohio blogger DJ Byrnes. It depicted Elia on a call with the flag clearly displayed behind him, alongside a pocket constitution and a Congressional calendar.

Byrnes shared his thoughts on social media, indicating, “A friend in D.C. had a Zoom call with Congressman Taylor’s office, and Angelo Elia had what can only be described as an American swastika flag prominently displayed.”

According to reports, officials described the swastika as an “optical illusion” that could easily go unnoticed. They stated that Nazi symbols tend to be more evident when captured on video or in photographs. It was noted that multiple Congressional offices had received similar flags earlier in the year, but one office reportedly discarded its flag because the swastika was too overt.
