Republican Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno introduced a law banning foreign flags on the U.S. Capitol, citing the proposed Ukrainian flag during a speech in Congress on Tuesday.

Moreno (R-Ohio), a Colombian immigrant who became a legal American citizen at the age of 18, explained his opposition to foreign flags flying in Congress and introduced the “Loyalty Act” which prohibits the display of foreign flags on Capitol premises.
“When I came to this country as a child, I pledged my loyalty to America and America, so it's very uncomfortable for me to see elected officials raising the flags of foreign countries like Ukraine in the halls of Congress,” claimed Moreno.
“We've always made a vow to the American people who put them first. When the average American struggles, we stopped sending billions overseas in endless wars,” he continued.
Before President Donald Trump's speech to Congress on Tuesday, Moreno handed the American flag to other Republican senators.
Moreno shared that the inspiration for the ban on flags stems from his own journey to becoming a naturalized citizen as a young man.
“I stood in front of the truly angry Marine, put his fingers on my face and said, 'Remember, you bow to just one flag,'” he recalled.
“And I think the fact that we have Democrats bring flags from other countries into their rooms is dishonest. If they're going to do that, it's going to be an opportunity for Republicans to remind the country that we're standing in America, taking a little time to show why most Ohioans should care more about foreign lands where they don't know where it is.”
“We have a lot of things that unite us as Americans, our language, our culture, our flag, our shared history. These are things we should celebrate, and we should not use those things to divide us,” he added.
