A tragic mass shooting in a Midtown office building on Monday marked New York City’s deadliest gun incident in 25 years.
Shane Tamra shot four individuals, including officers and business executives, before taking his own life later that day.
The last time the city saw such a fatal incident was in 2000 when five people died in a shooting, according to Mark Bryant, director of a nonprofit focused on gun violence.
Unlike Monday’s shooting, where the perpetrator died, all five victims in the 2000 case were innocent civilians.
Since then, New York has experienced several mass shootings—defined as instances where four or more individuals are shot—but none this century have resulted in a higher death toll than the recent tragedy on Park Avenue, even if some other incidents involved more gunfire but fewer fatalities.
In 2022, Frank James threw a smoke grenade and opened fire on a packed subway train, injuring ten people, all of whom survived.
Another notable case involved Dr. Henry Bello, who returned to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital with an assault rifle and fatally shot a female doctor while injuring six others; he resigned from the hospital amidst a sexual harassment scandal in 2017.
Latest Updates on NYC’s Mass Shooting:
A decade ago, a Marine veteran ignited a fire in a Greenwich pizza shop, ending in the deaths of a bartender and two NYPD auxiliary officers who chased him. The gunman, David Garvin, was shot dead by police, raising the total death count to four.
Details of the Incident
- The shooting at 345 Park Ave began around 6:28 PM.
- Shane Tamra, 27, was seen exiting a black BMW wielding an M4 rifle.
- He entered the lobby and immediately shot Officer Didalur Islam, 36.
- Tamra then shot a woman hiding behind a pillar and continued shooting as he moved toward the elevators.
- Another man was shot and critically injured in the lobby.
- Tamra allowed an unharmed woman to leave the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he shot one more person.
- He ultimately took his own life on that floor.
- The duration of the chaos remains unclear, but police later confirmed the situation was under control and that the shooter was neutralized.
“You never really know when these incidents will occur,” Bryant noted, expressing surprise at the high population density in New York City.
Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish reported that New York City had seen its fewest recorded shootings and murders this year, thanks to proactive efforts to reduce gun violence.
As of Monday, the U.S. recorded its 254th mass shooting of the year, a data point obtained from gun violence archives.
This figure represents a reduction from previous years, and if the trend continues, the nation could see fewer than 500 mass shootings in a year for the first time since 2019, according to Bryant.
Bryant praised the city’s tougher gun regulations and improved policing in response to the gun violence crisis of the late 20th century.
