Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.) denied reports that she said President Joe Biden lost the key battleground state of Michigan following his dismal performance in Thursday’s debate.
Governor Whitmer posted to X, “Anyone who claims I say you can’t win Michigan is a big liar. Let’s keep trying.”

Politico Jonathan Martin report Governor Whitmer called Biden campaign chair Jennifer O’Malley Dillon on Friday and said there were no underlying rumors that she was replacing Biden, but also said Michigan is no longer a winnable state for Biden.
What’s new: Governor Whitmer, who has been the target of much wishcasting, called Biden officials on Friday to deny any ties to the petition and reiterate her support for the president.
She also shared how tough Michigan is going to be going forward. But her 2028 rival candidate sold me on the call…

This was coming from a person close to Whitmer’s potential rival for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, Martin reported.
The report also said Democratic governors were “deeply frustrated” because they could potentially replace Biden as the party’s presidential nominee and did not want to be seen as disloyal.
Their camp is full of talent, ambition, and now a corrosive panic about Biden. Few of them would turn down the opportunity to replace him. But, of course, none of them want to be the ones wielding the political murder weapon.
“Tensions are rising among them,” he said, citing one Democratic governor who told him. “There’s a lot of anxiety and a lot of people are feeling very anxious.”
Democratic governors are reportedly “on standby,” feeling they have no choice but to defend the president, even as they are privately furious at him and his aides.
A Biden adviser told Martin that Democratic governors “all want an easy run to the White House” but they can’t get past Vice President Kamala Harris.
