Trump Administration to Regain Control of Union Station

The Trump administration is set to take back management of Washington, DC’s historic Union Station. Once a beautiful architectural landmark, it’s now seen as a crime-ridden site by federal authorities.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy commented on the situation, stating, “Union Station, which should be a point of pride, has fallen into disrepair. By regaining control, we aim to make this area safe and visually appealing again.”

The Department of Transportation has owned Union Station since the early 1980s but gradually passed management to the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation (USRC), a nonprofit tasked with preserving the historically significant travel hub, which opened in 1907. Unfortunately, declining revenue over the years has contributed to the station’s deterioration.

Under a new agreement with Amtrak and USRC, the Trump administration intends to utilize the commercial potential of Union Station to fund enhancements, such as improved elevator lighting, security measures, and other critical systems. This information was shared in an announcement from the Department of Transportation.

The agency expressed optimism about reinvestment and security upgrades boosting revenue from the station, which could, in turn, attract private investments for future expansions.

A formal lawsuit is anticipated in September to formalize the updated management strategy for Washington Union Station, as per officials.

Currently, National Guard troops are deployed around the capital, including federal stations, as President Trump pushes for a crackdown on rising violent crime. The Vice President recently visited the soldiers stationed at Union Station.

Additionally, the USDOT unveiled plans on Wednesday announcing Amtrak’s connection between Boston and Washington, revealing a new high-speed Acela train in the busiest rail corridor in the United States, which significantly impacts the national economy.

This new train can reach speeds of up to 160 mph, surpassing the current models by 10 mph and accommodating 27% more passengers.
