Mamdani’s Mayoral Support Questions Raised
During an interview on CNN’s “Inside Politics,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul sidestepped inquiries about her potential support for Zoran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for New York City mayor. The discussion followed a tragic shooting in the city on Monday, where Hochul was prompted to respond to comments made by Representative Elise Stefanik.
Hochul expressed frustration, saying, “It’s pathetic enough to get it. Seriously, I’m going after an unelected official who said something in 2020 when so many people came and gave me a break.” She emphasized her commitment to standing up to the gun lobby, stating, “I don’t talk about tweets… I know what I’m doing.”
Mamdani recently clinched the Democratic primary with a 12-point lead over former Governor Cuomo, who remains in the race. His campaign has garnered endorsements from prominent progressives, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Despite supporting Mamdani against Trump’s threats, Hochul hasn’t indicated any intention to back him in the mayoral race. When questioned directly about her support, she replied, “No, listen, why are we talking about this today? We have families that are saddened. Sorry, we’re not talking about politics. This is not the time and place for that.”
As for Mamdani, he faces competition from Mayor Eric Adams, Jim Walden, and Republican Curtis Swa, who are all running as independents. Hochul reiterated her position on gun safety, claiming that New York leads the way in the state. She added that her investment in law enforcement exceeds that of previous governors, stating, “That’s what I call funding the police, so stop bias.” Yet, the conversation about Mamdani and the political landscape seems to linger, raising questions about the future of endorsements in this pivotal election.
