Controversy Over Hochul’s Headscarf Appearance

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, faced backlash from Republicans and conservative commentators following her choice to wear a headscarf during a visit to the Islamic Cultural Center of New York.

While addressing attendees at the “Jummah” prayer service on a recent Friday, Hochul expressed her gratitude for being welcomed by community members, including Kuwait’s ambassador to the UN, Tareq Albanai.

Hochul referred to the head covering as a “standard gesture of respect” within the mosque, but her critics accused her of political opportunism. Some opponents argued that this action undermines core Western and feminist principles, especially so close to the 25th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

U.S. Representative Brandon Gill (R-Texas) joined the criticism, using social media to highlight what he termed Democratic hypocrisy. He shared a clip of Hochul in the headscarf and critiqued the left’s narrative.

“Democrats: ‘Sexist Republicans are turning America into the Handmaid’s Tale!’ Also Democrats,” Gill remarked, including a screenshot of Hochul’s appearance.

Conservative activist Riley Gaines echoed the critique, posting, “A self-described feminist voluntarily wearing a hijab to not offend/arouse Muslim men. Oh, the irony.”

Rob Schmitt, a host at Newsmax, also condemned the action, utilizing sarcasm to spotlight what he sees as a double standard in progressive feminism.

“Yes hide your hair. Subjugate yourself to Islam and men,” Schmitt stated on social media. “It’s your job as a woman to make sure men don’t see any sexuality in you. Good job [Hochul].”

Media figure Spencer Pratt added to the commentary, poking fun at Hochul’s self-identification as a “feminist icon.” He shared the clip of her in the headscarf, saying, “Feminist icon, Kathy Hochul. Slay, kween!” He underscored the contradiction between her claims about women’s rights and her choice to wear attire that some would deem inherently patriarchal.
