Governor of Indiana declares unprecedented tuition freeze at state universities

Indiana Freezes Tuition Fees for Public Universities

Indiana has decided to freeze tuition rates across the state, aiming to make higher education more accessible for college students. Governor Mike Brown made this announcement in a press release, indicating that public universities are committed to maintaining these fees steady for the upcoming academic years, specifically 2025-2026 and 2026-2027.

This is a notable moment since, according to state records, it’s the first time multiple campuses have agreed to keep tuition constant at the same time since at least 2010. The commitment is clear: over the next two years, university boards are dedicated to not increasing tuition or fees for undergraduates.

The Indiana Board of Higher Education has unanimously voted in favor of this measure, aligning with Brown’s call for affordability in education. Samantha Flyshaker, a student representative on the board, mentioned that keeping tuition flat opens doors for students from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing that education should be for everyone, not just a select few.

Brown, speaking about the initiative, said, “A month ago, we asked public institutions to seek efficiencies and streamline services while maintaining quality.” He believes this decision signals a commitment to putting students and parents first and positions Indiana as a leader in affordable, high-quality education.

College tuition has been on the rise, leading many students into significant debt. Recent data from the New York Federal Reserve highlights this issue, showing that student loan debt reached $1.6 trillion in the fourth quarter of 2023.
