Whitmer Believes America is Ready for a Woman President

Michigan’s Democratic governor, Gretchen Whitmer, expressed her belief that the United States is prepared for a female president. This statement came as a response to former First Lady Michelle Obama’s recent comments suggesting that voters might not be ready to elect a woman to the White House.

In an NPR interview released on Tuesday, Whitmer shared her admiration for Obama, saying, “I have love for her, and the last thing I want to do is disagree.” Still, she offered her own take on the situation. “I think America is ready for a woman president,” she stated. “It really comes down to people making a choice.” She pointed out that even though Kamala Harris didn’t defeat Donald Trump in the most recent election, women were winning elections nationwide.

Whitmer noted the success of women in difficult races, mentioning the victories of other Democratic governors like Abigail Spanberger of Virginia and Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey. She believes there’s a growing hunger for female leadership. However, she mused, “For some reason, we haven’t had a female president yet. I think we will at some point in the near future.”

Conversely, Michelle Obama had stated in November that Americans were “not ready” for a woman president, referencing Harris’s defeat in the last election. In her book promotion, Obama lamented that “we have a lot of growing to do,” adding that many men still struggle with accepting female leadership.

When asked if Harris’s loss could solely be attributed to her gender, Whitmer disagreed, saying, “I don’t think it was just gender, no.” As for her future political ambitions, Whitmer can’t seek another term as governor due to term limits, and while she’s been mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race, she stated her focus remains on serving Michigan and supporting party candidates in upcoming midterm elections.

On methods for Democrats to secure wins in the midterms, Whitmer suggested a return to basics in their campaigning. “Everyone in this country expects their government to improve their lives,” she reflected. “That’s our formula here in Michigan, and I think it can be successfully replicated anywhere.”
