Graham believes Trump will leave the summit if Putin demands an unfavorable agreement.

Graham ‘confident’ Trump will walk away from summit if Putin ‘insists on bad deal’

Sen. Lindsey Graham Supports Trump-Putin Meeting

Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent advocate for increased sanctions on Moscow and its allies, expressed his backing for President Trump’s plan to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This statement came on Saturday.

Referencing the Cold War era and the relationship between former President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, Graham indicated his trust in Trump. He remarked, “I’m confident he will leave the meeting like Reagan did. Good luck, President, in your efforts to end this brutal war,” sharing his thoughts on social media.

Graham also stated, “The world should be pulling for you. I know I am.” His comments followed Trump’s announcement regarding his upcoming discussions aimed at concluding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, set to meet with Russia’s leader in Alaska next week.

During the summit, Trump is suggesting that Eastern European nations might consider land exchanges to expedite peace negotiations. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has not been invited to the meeting, dismissed this notion and urged the U.S. to prioritize Ukraine’s involvement.

Trump appeared to downplay reports suggesting that Putin and Zelensky wanted to engage in conversations first, asserting, “He wants to see me,” when speaking to reporters on Friday.

This anticipated dialogue has been overshadowed by critiques of Trump’s previous promises to impose new sanctions on Russia, which he hasn’t fully executed. The President had initially granted Putin about 50 days to agree to a ceasefire but later reduced this timeline as attacks on Ukraine persisted.

Still, Trump announced potential tariffs of up to 50% on India for its purchases of Russian oil. These sanctions were part of a bipartisan push led by Graham and Senator Richard Blumenthal, aimed at targeting Russian military capabilities.

Despite the pressure, Graham defended Trump, commending his decision to meet with Putin prior to implementing any new financial restrictions. “To those who criticize President Trump for wanting to meet with Putin, consider how Reagan approached Gorbachev in his efforts to end the Cold War,” he articulated.

As the backdrop of these discussions unfolds, Putin has been actively strengthening ties with both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Recently, the two leaders had a detailed conversation, in which Modi expressed gratitude for Putin’s updates on Ukraine and reaffirmed his commitment to deepening the strategic partnership between India and Russia. “I look forward to hosting Putin in India later this year,” Modi noted.
