BLUE HILL, Maine — Graham Platner has secured the Democratic nomination for Senate, navigating a particularly challenging phase in the race.
Platner, a military veteran turned oyster farmer, triumphed over two notable opponents in Maine’s Democratic primary. His campaign garnered the backing of progressive figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Rep. Ro Khanna, as reported by the Associated Press.
Now, he faces moderate Republican Senator Susan Collins, who was unchallenged in her own primary. This election is one of the significant contests that could influence whether Republicans maintain their slight majority in the Senate.
Platner is known for his advocacy of economic populism that aims to curb corporate influence. Interestingly, two-term Democratic Governor Janet Mills also led the primary, though she had previously suspended her campaign after struggling with fundraising and polling against him.
At a final rally before the primary, Platner asserted, “We will win in November and take power back for the people of this country.”
Throughout his campaign, Platner has faced several controversies, including troubling comments he made online, a tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol, and allegations of inappropriate behavior during his marriage. He has consistently denied these allegations, particularly those regarding violence.
Just a day before the primary, a former campaign staffer publicly criticized Platner’s character, raising doubts about his viability as a candidate. Despite this, Platner expressed gratitude to Maine voters for their continued support, referencing his past struggles with PTSD and the challenges he’s faced.
“Ten years ago, when the hurtful things I said online became public… Maine supported me,” he reflected. “Now, you are behind me as every piece of that past is dug up.”
At a rally in Bar Harbor, another supporter highlighted, “Is he perfect? Absolutely not. But I think he’s going to come in and do a good job,” while others remained skeptical about his candidacy.
Senator Collins, meanwhile, acknowledged the serious nature of the allegations against Platner, stating he has many questions to answer. He faces significant opposition from Republican groups, with ads attacking his character already being aired.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) characterized Platner as a “fraudster,” pointing to perceived discrepancies in his background. The Republican National Committee (RNC) has also criticized him, referencing disturbing statements made by Platner in the context of the allegations.
Despite the outcry, notable Democratic figures continue to support Platner, with Khanna emphasizing the unified goal of unseating Collins. Platner has built a robust fundraising base and attracted sizeable crowds, making Maine a crucial target for Democrats aiming to regain Senate control.
However, defeating Collins won’t be straightforward. Six years ago, she surprised many with a decisive victory, defying predictions against her. A moderate Republican, she has sometimes crossed party lines, recently voting to convict Trump after the January 6 Capitol attack, but also supporting controversial nominations like that of Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
