Trump Endorses Lindsey Graham’s Sister for Senate Seat
In a recent discussion on “Outnumbered,” the panel addressed the unfortunate passing of Senator Lindsey Graham, who died at the age of 71 due to an aortic dissection. His death has sparked an array of tributes from various figures in Washington. Interestingly, President Donald Trump has proposed Lindsey’s sister, Darline Graham Nordon, as a candidate to take over his Senate seat.
The bond between Darline and Lindsey was notably strong. Unfortunately, tragedy has struck again as she mourns the loss of her brother, who played a significant role in her life. Now, shortly after his death, she is being considered to fill his Senate position.
Both President Trump and Senator Tim Scott advocate for her appointment, with political sources indicating that Scott is in discussions with her about possibly serving the remainder of Lindsey’s term.
Trump’s Unexpected Suggestion for Graham’s Successor
President Trump has encouraged South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint Graham, highlighting Darline as his “amazing sister,” suggesting she’s fit to fulfill the interim role for the Senate.
“This would be a fantastic tribute to Lindsay, who cherished her dearly,” Trump remarked on Truth Social.
A press conference is set for Monday afternoon where Governor McMaster will announce his nomination, with Sen. Scott expected to be present.
However, even if Darline is selected, this would merely be a temporary arrangement. Meanwhile, there’s already talk of other candidates circling for the Republican nomination to eventually succeed Lindsey Graham.
The filing period to replace Graham for a full six-year term kicks off on July 21, with special primary elections planned for August 11. Many South Carolina politicians view this as a significant opportunity to step into a Senate role.
It’s worth noting that unlike her brother, who had decades of experience in both the House and Senate, Darline has never held public office. She is a mother of two, with a background in vocational rehabilitation, assisting individuals with disabilities in finding employment.
The Search for Graham’s Senate Replacement Discussed Amidst the Loss
There’s still some uncertainty regarding Darline’s readiness to take on such a role. When asked about the situation, she expressed, “Honestly, I’m feeling pretty devastated right now,” shortly after Trump’s announcement.
Darline and Lindsey shared a unique relationship, particularly after their parents passed away within a year of each other. Lindsey, only in his early 20s at the time, took on the responsibilities of both brother and guardian for her.
Reflecting on their relationship in a 2015 conversation with C-SPAN, Lindsey said, “Of all the things that have happened in my life, the fact that she turned out so well is the highlight by far.”
Trump and Graham: An Evolving Relationship
Darline has acknowledged how crucial Lindsey was in raising her after their parents’ death. After becoming her legal guardian, he even joined the Air Force to qualify her for military benefits, ensuring she completed both high school and college.
“He was like a brother, a father, and a mother all wrapped into one,” she said in a 2015 interview.
Throughout Lindsey’s extensive political career, Darline was an active participant in his campaigns. She recalled fond memories, saying, “My parents cared about people, and Lindsay was always there for me—helping with my homework, caring for me when I was sick, and teaching me how to ride a bike.”
“He never let me down,” she added. “Taking on the responsibility of raising his little sister came from a deep place within Lindsay.”
