Joseph Savarino, the grandson of the well-known Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, faced charges on Monday for misdemeanor driving while impaired. This arises from a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 15-year-old bicyclist.
Records from the Durham County court indicate that the 26-year-old Savarino acknowledged consuming alcohol on Saturday night prior to the accident, with a breathalyzer test revealing his blood alcohol content at 0.11 percent, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08%.
According to police reports, the boy was cycling in northwest Durham when he was struck by Savarino’s vehicle. The breathalyzer test was administered roughly an hour after the collision.
Savarino appeared in court on Monday, where, following the judge’s decision, his driver’s license was revoked. He was subsequently released on a secured bond of $100,000, which was posted by his mother, Debbie Savarino, who is also Krzyzewski’s daughter and serves as an assistant athletic director at Duke University.
Fox News Digital attempted to contact Savarino’s attorney, Butch Williams, but did not get an immediate reply.
In a related occurrence, Michael Savarino, Joseph’s brother and another grandson of Krzyzewski, pleaded guilty in July 2022 to a DUI charge linked to an event in November 2021. During that incident, he was driving a vehicle owned by Duke’s star player at the time, Paolo Banchero. Under the plea agreement, he received a sentence of 12 months probation, along with fines, community service, and required completion of a treatment program.
Interestingly, Banchero faced charges for assisting with the DWI, but those charges were eventually dismissed.
At just 20 years old during the incident, Savarino had already made a name for himself by participating in 13 games as part of his grandfather’s team.
