On Monday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed her gratitude to President Trump for granting pardons to numerous individuals involved in efforts to challenge the 2020 election results. However, she urged him to extend similar considerations to former Colorado County Clerk Tina Peters.
In a post on the social platform X, Greene stated, “Thank you @POTUS for pardoning the 2020 alternate electors! They fought for election integrity and were severely punished by a politically weaponized government.”
She added, “But please free Tina Peters!! She is a wrongly convicted and imprisoned Gold Star mother. She is a political hostage in America!”
Peters, once the clerk for Mesa County, became a noteworthy figure among pro-Trump supporters following the 2020 election. She was the first local official to be convicted for her role in attempting to overturn the election results.
Her conviction was for election interference due to violating the county’s voting system, leading to a nine-year prison sentence.
According to prosecutors, Peters was accused of stealing a security badge from a county employee, allowing an associate of MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell to access the county’s voter system, amid overly bold claims of fraud made by Lindell.
There were also allegations that Peters had someone impersonate a county worker to acquire a copy of the election system’s hard drive before and after a software update in May 2021.
Greene’s call for a pardon follows Trump’s recent announcement of broad pardons for numerous high-profile individuals linked to efforts to overturn the 2020 election, such as Mark Meadows, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis, among others.
These pardons primarily relate to federal crimes, but since Trump’s allies were not prosecuted in federal courts, the pardons are largely symbolic. Peters, having been charged with a state crime, wouldn’t have her conviction or sentence changed even if she received a pardon from the president.
In recent months, Greene has become a more outspoken figure within the GOP, showing an independent stance by diverging from party norms on issues like health care subsidies and the release of Jeffrey Epstein’s files. Despite her criticisms of various party members, she continues to support Trump and has consistently backed those charged from the January 6 events, praising the pardons he granted to over 1,500 individuals linked to the riot earlier this year.
