Negotiations Between Ukraine and Russia: Insights from Fox Legal Analyst
During a segment on Fox Business’ “Evening Edit,” legal analyst Greg Jarrett discussed the prospects of a ceasefire following an agreement on territorial control between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
On Friday, Putin met with former President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, as Trump has been actively pursuing peace between the two nations. When asked by host Elizabeth MacDonald about the potential for a ceasefire post-meeting, Jarrett expressed some optimism, suggesting that there might be possibilities for an agreement.
“I think he has a good chance at a ceasefire here,” Jarrett remarked. However, he acknowledged that the true challenge lies in providing Putin with what he needs to present as a victory to his own people, which could include security guarantees, cuts in Western military aid to Ukraine, and possibly some land exchanges.
“Zelenskyy might resist that, but if there are enough incentives to negotiate, we could see some sort of property return to Zelenskyy, allowing Putin to claim some territory as well. In that scenario, they could both call themselves winners,” Jarrett noted.
The meeting between Trump and Putin has generated much anticipation, especially after Trump offered a 50-day timeline for discussions regarding a ceasefire. Prior to this, Trump had provided Ukraine with offensive weapons while threatening Russia with significant sanctions. This stance, however, has left Putin hesitant to engage in dialogue regarding Ukraine.
Moreover, Trump has indicated he may tighten restrictions even further, imposing secondary tariffs on major Russian industries. Following a meeting on August 6 between U.S. envoy Steve Witkov and Putin, there were suggestions of possibly halting military actions in exchange for conceding the Russian-speaking Donbas region. Zelenskyy, however, pushed back against this notion, emphasizing that Donbas is crucial for any future attacks by Russia.
