Griffin Canning all in on Mets’ pitch technology lab: ‘Stupid not to use’

Port St. Lucy – Griffin Canning became obsessed with the Mets this offseason and began discussing technology that will help pitchers improve on Zoom calls while team officials are recruiting.

One such technology system is Kinatrax. This shows the three-dimensional skeleton of the pitcher's delivery, not a video of his mechanics.

Canned food was “intrigued” by discussion. He said it was a factor in his decision to sign with the Mets. The right-hander received a one-year contract worth $4.25 million from the club.

Currently in its third season of the Pitching Lab, the Mets are one of the MLB teams at the forefront of incorporating technology into pitching development.

The 28-year-old Canning spent six seasons with angels who were less likely to adopt such a method.

“A little different,” Canning said. “The angels may have had everything, but they really didn't take it in. They weren't their fault, but sometimes they were overwhelmed, so they were prepared for it. When I felt it was possible, I wanted to provide them with information. [Mets instructors] If you look at me, I think we'll dive into some of those things. ”

Canning understands why pitchers view a new wave of available information as overwhelming, but he said he is here to learn.

As a “delivery manager,” Canning wants to study his mechanisms. If he has a good idea about his best delivery, he says he will be able to take advantage of the new pitch.

“I think it's stupid not to use technology to make yourself better,” Canning said. “But it's important, too, those who do it and analyze it and boil it down for you in a simple way that you can understand it.”

The Mets coaching group includes pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, new assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel and director of pitching development Eric Jagers.

Canning pitched 5.19 ERA in 32 appearances last season (31 as a starter) and had numbers to contribute as part of his plans to hire most of this season as part of his Mets The Mets plan.

Last season, the Mets received strong results from Sean Mania and Luis Severino as they were trying to revive their careers.

“Sometimes, you might come to some kind of new environment and someone might say something else like that or something small,” Canning said. “You can eat the energy of guys. Obviously, like the year the Mets were able to have last year, I could roll into spring training and bring some good vibes I think so.”
