Gunman Detained After Breaking Into Colorado Supreme Court, Holding Guard At Gunpoint

A man has been arrested after shooting out a window at the Colorado Supreme Court building, causing “extensive damage” and threatening a security guard at gunpoint.

Around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, an armed intruder shot out a window at the Colorado Supreme Court building, surrounded the building for nearly two hours, and then pointed a gun at a security guard, authorities said.

The suspect was identified Tuesday as Brandon Olsen, 44. Police arrested Olsen on charges of arson, burglary and burglary.

Colorado State Police said in a news release that the incident occurred after a two-car accident involving Olsen occurred outside a building in downtown Denver.

Olsen reportedly pointed the gun at the other driver, pulled the trigger, but missed the target and instead shot out the window of Colorado's Ralph L. Carr Justice Center, which houses the state courthouse. It is said that

The armed suspect then entered the building and was confronted by an unarmed Colorado State Patrol officer, officials said. The suspect also pointed a gun at the security guard, “demanded access to more of the building,” and forcibly stole a building key from the guard.

“The individual obtained a key from the security guard and proceeded to other parts of the building, gaining access to an unknown number of floors,” authorities said in a statement.

Responding officers did not fire any shots at the suspect, and the suspect was taken into custody approximately two hours after officers arrived on the scene.

Officials also said the case appears unrelated to a new Colorado Supreme Court ruling barring former President Donald Trump from voting. President Trump is expected to appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court later on Tuesday.

“The Colorado State Patrol and Denver Police Department are treating this incident seriously, but at this time it is not believed to be related to previous threats against Colorado Supreme Court justices,” the Colorado State Patrol and Denver Police Department said in a statement. “There is,” he said.
