Armed groups abducted, killed, and then dismembered a political candidate and his wife. The gunmen left the body in the back of a pickup truck on a busy street in the popular beach resort city of Acapulco, Guerrero state. Mexico is experiencing its bloodiest political season in history, with more than 30 politicians murdered so far.
The gruesome murder occurred this week in Acapulco, where authorities responded to the Adolfo Luis Cortines neighborhood regarding a body inside a vehicle. Authorities sealed off the area while they collected dismembered human remains.
mexican El Diario report The two bodies were said to be those of Anibal Zuniga Cortes and his wife Rubi Bravo. Mr. Zuniga was a candidate for city council in Coyuca de Benitez. He was the candidate of the opposition coalition consisting of the PAN-PRI and the PRD, which united nationwide to oppose Mexico’s ruling party Morena.
Earlier in the day, authorities responded to a similar incident in which an armed group abandoned four bodies in the middle of the road.The incident took place in the Renacimiento area, López Doriga Digital report. Authorities found a pickup truck set on fire just meters away from the body. The perpetrators are believed to have used the truck to move the bodies and then set them on fire. The violence in Acapulco comes amid a fierce turf war between various drug cartels for control of lucrative drug routes into Mexico and control of drug-producing areas.
The NGO Laboratorio Electoral has recorded 70 murders linked to political campaigns, including of candidates and campaign workers, since the start of the election period in June 2023. So far this political period has seen 33 candidates killed and multiple kidnappings and attacks. , threatening behavior.
