Mexican authorities are investigating the shooting death of a former drug enforcement officer’s wife and the recent kidnapping of an American citizen near Cancun, Mexico’s Caribbean hotspot. Mexican authorities reportedly tried to cover up one of the incidents as a way to allay the growing perception that violence was gripping the country.
The shooting of the woman occurred Friday night in the tourist town of Tulum in the state of Quintana Roo, about 110 miles south of Cancun.According to local news outlets Notikaribe, the attack occurred on the beach along the Tulum-Boca-Paira highway. Local authorities tried to cover up the shooting death of a woman who claimed to be the wife of a former DEA agent in Cancun, the newspaper reported. The second victim was described only as a man with gunshot wounds, but no further details were released. U.S. authorities have not provided any information confirming or denying the incident.
The shooting occurred days after Mexican troops relocated to Quintana Roo state and rescued kidnapped Americans from New York. The victim was held captive for three days until a rescue operation was carried out. Authorities said the kidnapping was ransom-related, as the perpetrators were trying to collect about $15,000 from the victim’s relatives.
As Breitbart Texas reported, Mexico’s once-peaceful Caribbean coast is now in a state of conflict over control of lucrative drug-trafficking routes into Mexico and the lucrative drug distribution to the hordes of tourists who continue to visit. It has become a hotspot for violence as organizations fight.
