An emotional Gus Waltz was seen in the crowd at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night as his father formally accepted the vice presidential nomination.
Standing with his mother, Gwen, and sister, Hope, Waltz had tears streaming down his cheeks and appeared to be proudly sobbing openly as his mother and sister cried quietly next to him.
But his emotions reached a fever pitch when his father addressed the family directly while commenting on the family’s struggles with fertility treatments.
“Gus, Hope, Gwen, you guys mean my world. I love you guys,” Gov. Tim Walz said, as his 17-year-old son jumped to his feet, clapped, cried and pointed at his father.
“That’s my dad!” Gus Waltz said excitedly.
While the Waltzes have been open about their need to turn to fertility treatments, they’ve also been open about Gus’ neurodiversity. The family has spoken about Gus’s nonverbal learning disability and ADHD.
Gus Waltz’s sentiments struck a chord with many social media users, including former White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who posted on X: “Team Gus Waltz.”
“Tim Waltz was 100% perfect in his pitch, a grand slam, a touchdown in every sense of the word, but somehow Gus Waltz was even better,” posted former White House communications director Kate Bedingfield.
