A St. Louis branch of Life Time Fitness could face civil and criminal charges for “adopting a policy” allowing transgender women into the women’s locker room, the state’s attorney general announced Friday.

The investigation comes after a 52-year-old transgender woman entered the women’s locker room, infuriating some Life Time customers, some of whom had to correct her and instruct her to use specific language when talking about transgender people.

“What’s even more concerning is the fact that instead of taking seriously gym members’ safety concerns, they rudely correct them and demand that they refer to this biologically male individual by their ‘correct pronouns,'” Bailey argued.
It later said it was considering filing criminal charges against Jim under various laws after a number of its constituents complained that he was “allowing Jim, a biological male, to actively exploit the private space of women and girls.”

As a company, we are committed to following the law when it comes to public accommodations in all areas in which we operate. When members join Life Time, we verify their identity by checking their state-issued identification. Missouri provides a mechanism for individuals to change the gender designation on their state-issued driver’s license,” the company said.
“In this case, the member presented a state-issued driver’s license identifying her as a woman and, under Missouri law, we cannot refuse or discriminate on the basis of gender. Therefore, the member will be using Life Time’s women’s locker room.”
