American Century Championship: A Celebrity Golf Showdown

The American Century Championship is set to bring together a host of celebrities for a unique golf tournament at Lake Tahoe’s Edgewood Golf Course. This annual event, running from July 10 to July 12, is known for its competitive yet entertaining atmosphere.

In this championship, a modified Stableford scoring system is used instead of conventional stroke play. This means players accumulate points based on their performance at each hole, rather than just counting strokes. For example, an albatross earns 10 points, while a birdie gives 3, and a bogey scores nothing. Interestingly, a score of two over par results in a deduction of 2 points.

Last year, former NHL star Joe Pavelski emerged victorious with 73 points, trailed by World Series champion John Smoltz at 64 points. Country singer Jake Owen placed third with 62 points, while Taylor Twellman and Stephen Curry rounded out the top five.

In a recent discussion, Smoltz reflected on his performance, noting a slow start in the first round that set him back. He shared, “I started slowly. In every tournament, I tend to rally in the later rounds, but this time I just kept making pars, which felt quite frustrating. I once had a stretch of 29 pars in a row, and honestly, it was maddening since I only got one point for each of those.” He emphasized the need to be more aggressive for better scoring.

LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam echoed these thoughts, suggesting that players should adopt a bolder approach given the scoring format. “It’s different from what I’m used to, where consistency was key. Here, it’s about being aggressive to rack up points,” she said.

Favorites for this year include Smoltz, Sorenstam, Pavelski, Curry, and other sports figures like Adam Thielen and Austin Reeves. Beyond the competition, players often highlight the enjoyable social environment at the tournament.

Joe Mauer remarked on the caliber of talent and the overall experience, saying, “It’s a great event that brings people together.”

Joe Theisman, a veteran of the tournament having participated in 36 of them, stated that it’s not just about golf; it’s also about the connections made. “It’s a chance to meet interesting people and enjoy the beautiful setting at Lake Tahoe,” he mentioned.

The atmosphere attracts families, too, as Patrick Peterson indicated how much his daughters look forward to the event each year, enjoying activities beyond the golf—like zip-lining.

Jerome Bettis appreciates the unique locker room-like ambiance, describing it as a refreshing opportunity to reconnect with fellow athletes. He stated, “Once you retire, those chances diminish, so it’s great to relive that camaraderie.”

Beyond just entertainment, the tournament has raised over $8 million for various charities, with American Century Investments contributing significantly towards medical research initiatives. This shows that the event is not only a platform for celebrities but also makes a positive impact on the community.
