Jeffries Criticizes Trump’s Actions During Ongoing Government Shutdown
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York described President Donald Trump’s behavior as “indifferent” and “irrational” during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. This came in response to a recent post by Trump related to Democrats, amidst the ongoing government shutdown.
Jeffries highlighted that the administration seems to be “personally targeting” memes in its negotiations. NBC’s Kristen Welker asked Jeffries if Trump still believes he can negotiate with the Democrats, referencing a video in which Trump depicted Jeffries humorously, suggesting he is part of a “party of hate.”
Last Monday, Trump shared a meme video on social media showing Jeffries with a mustache and sombrero, all while mariachi music played in the background. “These actions are outrageous, they’re indifferent, and they speak for themselves. The American people deserve better than fake videos and a president who spends more time on the golf course than addressing serious issues,” Jeffries remarked.
He insisted that he and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are prepared to negotiate and tackle these pressing issues head-on. Additionally, lawmakers accused Republicans of perpetuating a “living” crisis.
In a challenging exchange, Welker confronted Jeffries about his previous stance on government funding. She showed a clip from 2023 where he stated that the only course of action was a continuous resolution at the fiscal year 2023 level.
“Why not discuss funding the government and extending the Obamacare tax credit afterwards? They won’t expire until the year’s end,” Welker questioned.
Jeffries reiterated the need for bipartisan negotiations, suggesting that both parties should work together in good faith to reopen the government and pass a meaningful spending bill. He noted the importance of maintaining tax credits, highlighting that healthcare costs are too high already.
“If these affordable tax credits end, healthcare premiums will rise, making life even more costly for Americans,” he warned. The White House has yet to respond to requests for comments on this issue.
