Jeffries Warns Florida Republicans About Potential Redistricting Risks
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York has cautioned Florida’s Republicans regarding potential redistricting efforts. This follows Virginia’s decision to approve a plan that may result in Democrats gaining four additional seats in the U.S. House.
A constitutional amendment, which barely received voter support, could sidestep a bipartisan commission on redistricting and permit new districts to be created by Virginia’s Democratic General Assembly. Meanwhile, the state Supreme Court is currently examining the legality of this plan.
In remarks to Punchbowl News founder Jake Sherman, Jeffries expressed concern that the Florida Republican Party might face even greater losses if they proceed with their redistricting strategy.
He stated, “If Republicans in Florida push ahead with this questionable plan, it will just present another prime opportunity for Democrats, reminiscent of President Trump’s gerrymandering in Texas.”
Jeffries further indicated a robust focus on various Republican targets, including Mario Diaz-Balart, María Elvira Salazar, and others, stating, “We’re gearing up to challenge them all, and we intend to win. This will be an all-out war, anytime and anywhere.”
Moreover, he mentioned on X that Democrats successfully countered Donald Trump’s gerrymandering plan in Virginia and are now prepared to take on Governor DeSantis in Florida. “We will fight as hard as we can, wherever we are able.”
According to reports, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is set to initiate discussions on redistricting legislation during a special session of Congress starting April 28.
In a conversation with CNN, Jeffries noted that the vote in Virginia aimed to mitigate the gains made by Republicans in Texas. “Similar to Texas, the Republicans who said they were taking five seats from us have not succeeded in those districts. In Florida, we have problematic Republican policies, unpopular military actions, skyrocketing costs, and the negative impact of the Trump administration on real estate. If this map goes through, with all the corruption happening, the Republican Party’s inability to improve lives will likely lead to a significant loss, both in Florida and nationwide.”
