Haley’s neglect of slavery and the politics of race, color and caste

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley's failure to identify slavery as the main cause of the Civil War caused an uproar. But the media is missing a key issue in reporting the uproar: how some Republicans' tendency to avoid recognizing the facts of racial history sends a subtle message against racism. The question is whether it will encourage “colorism” In our politics.

For example, Haley likes to talk about “freedoms” and “rights” in the American experience, but neglects to include that they were once exclusive to white people. As a result, she tends to overlook the experiences of millions of Africans in bondage and how their labor and bodies helped propel America into an economic powerhouse.

As for the Civil War, her omission of slavery would distort the history of the state she ruled, South Carolina, which declared slavery and its preservation to be the primary reason for secession. In 1860, south carolina leaders To justify secession, they cited the “increasing hostility of non-slaveholding states toward slavery.” Other states in the American Union offered similar reasons for secession.

But Haley's reluctance to cite slavery as the main cause of the war is more than just political opportunism. It also creates a rationale for minimizing the effects of racism today. And it could intensify efforts to denigrate the legitimate concerns of Black Americans in the eyes of voters.

Furthermore, it could sanction the introduction of caste-hierarchical politics based on race and ethnicity. That is, politics that suggest that black Americans somehow lack an understanding of America's racial history compared to immigrants of color.

Mischaracterizing the effects of slavery and racism can foster social dynamics of people of color and caste that are common in India and countries with colonial histories. According to the Pew Center, caste system Class in India is “a social class inherited through the family, which may determine not only the occupations a person can work in, but also aspects of social life, such as who a person can marry…Today, almost all Indian A religion in which people identify themselves as a caste, regardless of their social status. “

Color and caste discrimination have permeated Indian history for thousands of years. Even heroic figures like mahatma gandhi They were prone to such beliefs. Today, this practice is most evident in the oppression of the 160 million dark-skinned Dalits. “Black Untouchable” of India.

Similar concepts of skin color and caste are found in immigrant communities from countries such as the Caribbean and Latin America. For example, immigrants from Brazil Society with over 136 different terms Describe skin color according to degree of social status.

Of course, color class bias is also known within the black American community. But people have had a very hard time understanding the origins of slavery and its power over social status and opportunity today. This is in a society where media depictions of fair skin as the norm for beauty and power are pervasive.

Born to parents from the Indian state of Punjab, Nikki Haley is no doubt well aware of the burden of caste in the treatment of servants in Indian immigrant communities. In California, for example, evidence of caste discrimination was the culprit. bill to prohibit practice. The bill, which was vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, reveals how caste thinking is introduced into the United States.

Haley's supporters are quick to note her efforts as South Carolina's governor to remove the Confederate flag. But it required the tragic killing of nine people by white supremacists. Emmanuel AME Church — and nationwide protests — urge her to do the right thing. Furthermore, one would think that after dealing with such a horrific act of racial violence, she would be more outspoken about the effects of slavery in America today.

Haley is not the only Republican politician of color to try to downplay racial issues for black Americans. Many prominent politicians of Indian origin followed this strategy. Such efforts to alleviate the reality of racism that Black people face can be heard in the statements of Republican presidential candidates. Vivek RamaswamyBorn in Ohio to upper-class Brahmin immigrants.

And black Americans' concerns about racism have been questioned by early politicians of Indian descent, such as the former. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindalby political commentators and other prominent media figures. Dinesh D'Souza, born in Mumbai, India. For example, he argues that claims of racial discrimination are exaggerated and that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 should be repealed.

Journalists are more subtle. Ramesh Ponnuru, was raised in Kansas by a Lutheran mother and Hindu father and has opposed black claims of systemic racism. All in all, this is a dirty political game played by people of color and caste, and we should be on guard.

There is little recourse for politicians who seek to ignore or minimize the impact of America's racial history. But there are ways to better prepare voters to respond to appeals to caste culture. As immigrant communities of color expand, Black American political leaders and their allies must be prepared to confront the challenges of people of color and caste politics.

For example, as Congress resumes debate on border security, the Congressional Black Caucus will advocate for education reform, including language requiring immigrants to be educated about the factual history of America's long struggle against slavery and racism. It should be proposed.
