Halloween display featuring ICE theme in Alabama sheriff's yard sparks debate

Controversial Halloween Display in Alabama Causes Stir

An Alabama sheriff is facing backlash for a Halloween display in her yard, which depicts what many view as an attack on ICE. However, the sheriff’s wife insists that the “joking” decorations were entirely her own idea.

Social media has been buzzing with images showing three skeletons dressed in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement shirts chasing two others wearing sombreros and traditional Mexican ponchos, as they attempt to escape by climbing a fence.

The display has incited outrage online, particularly after neighbors shared photos of local Republican lawmakers returning to their homes and accused them of promoting “flapping racism” with this display.

Neighbor Whitney Newman expressed her feelings on the matter, saying, “It’s hard to put into words how unfortunate it is to see an elected sheriff using his front yard to ridicule and dehumanize people.” Her remarks were shared in a Facebook post.

Newman added, “I don’t think it’s cute or funny. What law enforcement officials say has the potential to exacerbate tensions.” She referenced Sheriff Burch’s assurance that all residents should live without fear in their community.

“This crosses the line from a bad joke to a public statement about who deserves dignity,” she said. “I hope that our sheriff will practice what he preaches instead of flaunting this kind of racism.” There’s a sense that the community deserves more from its leaders.

The controversial decoration comes amid ongoing tensions between federal authorities, particularly in Oregon and Illinois, and anti-ICE protesters opposed to the Trump administration’s immigration policies.

The sheriff’s office has reportedly refrained from commenting on the situation, directing inquiries to Sheriff Burch’s wife, Michelle, who took full responsibility for the decor.

“Every year, I create Halloween decorations that are inspired by current themes,” Michelle stated, reinforcing that her husband plays a minimal role in the decorating process. “He mainly helps by cutting the grass while I do the decorating. This year, I incorporated elements reflecting both my Cuban heritage and the ongoing changes in federal immigration enforcement.”

She added that her parents were legal immigrants and mentioned her intention to create a new Halloween display soon, saying, “I’ll come up with something different right away. There’s no shortage of themes to explore.”
